The Collected Kitchen

What do you do when a client's kitchen needs a few updates to make it as modern as its neighboring rooms but any changes are probably a few years off? You've got to get creative...really creative.

The current conundrum: Upfitting an older kitchen that won't be updated any time soon to make it as cool as its dining room/sun room counterparts. Kitchens host so many surfaces and materials that are almost always hard and solid. Creating a beautiful, modern kitchen from scratch has quite a different set of challenges than making an outdated place look au courant. This kitchen I'm working on now boasts fun black and white tile flooring, butcher block and white porcelain tile countertops with a few blue and white tile accents. If that wasn't enough of a mix, we've got to tie in the pale pink that the dining room wall shares with the kitchen and eliminate the dark navy accents that actually do make some sense. What was I thinking??

My plan: Go with this eclectic mix and ram into it full force. We're going to up the amperage on the blue and white without paint and with ginger jars. They are unexpected in this space yet fully functional as countertop storage and will look just as good against the pale pink walls as they will with the backsplash's blue and white tiles. I'm also going to play with the black and white tile reference by adding some kitschy black floral throw pillows to the rattan bar stools. They will help make the space feel homey and luckily have a bit of blue and pink in them! Lastly, a few collectibles like china and artwork will be on display. I particularly am drawn to the Tobacco Leaf pattern because it does display so many fun and bright colors. It will seal the deal with every single color in the kitchen.

In the end, I think the result will be a really fun and personal space. It will be well collected, cozy and unlike most of the kitchen pins you'll see on Pinterest! In this day and age of unrealistic expectations, I think this space will challenge the notions of perfection and celebrate the charms of imperfection...with good taste, of course. Stay tuned (and cross your fingers for me)!

Kitchen Before & After

While these photos certainly don't demonstrate the most dramatic of transformations (not yet, at least), the new paint job in my galley kitchen is definitely an improvement! I've owned this house for five years and have repainted nearly every room except the kitchen...mainly because it needed the most work and felt the most daunting. Take a look at these before shots- peeling paint, mismatched finishes, a dull color to begin with, a ceiling that scared/scares me...

Oh my gosh- it gives me anxiety to look back at it! It was time for a change...a big one at that. So onto the Benjamin Moore site I logged and began to weigh my options digitally. I initially was leaning toward more of a greige but quickly realized that this space needed more cheerfulness after such a dull, drab green existence.

The color Beach Haven with a Mascarpone trim won out in the end. Beach Haven is a great sandy beige with just a hint of yellow. I liked that it brought out the lighter tones in the travertine tile and kitchen counter...not that I picked those out to begin with but sometimes you gotta work with what you've got.

Now where to go from here? All of the drapes in the kitchen were handmade by moi just a few weeks after I moved in five years ago. They were my first project but they should probably be switched out now. I also keep referring back to Jessie Epley's fabulous home feature on the Glitter Guide. Her kitchen was such a cute and well decorated space. As you can imagine, I'm now in the kitchen styling zone...

So now we officially enter phase 2, styling the space. I can't wait to show this little kitchen some love and give it the attention it deserves. Maybe then all my work will be done...probably not though. ;)

Zebrine Daydream

If you were an avid reader of Domino before the great publication elimination of the late 2000s, then you instantly recognize the first picture in this post. It's the home of designer Ashley Whittaker with her hallway decked out in Rose Cumming's Zebrine wallpaper. This image has been engraved in my brain- as well as a few other ladies', I'm sure- ever since it was first published in 2007. When you still obsess over it nearly seven years later, then you know you really love something.

The Zebrine paper is no doubt a busy print but it's also a classic. Cumming's unexpected twist on the zebra print by replacing black with navy feels thoroughly modern today even though this paper is by no means new. I find that I'm most attracted to its use in small doses, such as in a hallway or powder room, and also in a larger room's small slices, as Megan Winters Design used it above the wainscoting in the last photo.

I finally met this lively pattern in person on Friday after a sample arrived at my doorstep. Now my hopes have lifted way way up...

Does it belong in my funky little hallway? It's an odd shaped room with diagonal walls, chair rail moulding on three of four walls (why??) and an exposed brick chimney. Can I make this fabulous paper work in such a funky space?

What's your vote? Put this filly to pasture or go for a horse of a different color?

For the time being, I've got to put this issue on the back burner. It's time to paint the kitchen...finally...hooray!

More on all of these to follow...
