Spring 2015 Trend Report

To paraphrase Tom Ford in a recent interview, designers don't actually get together before every Fashion Week to select fabrics or share silhouettes...as much as it may seem like they do. At the offset, trends are fashion editors' ways of resetting the table after the visual feast they've devoured for the past 10 days and then their reinterpretations of the fashion shows trickle down into sales tactics, merchandising schemes and low end regurgitations. But it is fun to pretend that the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte sat across from Prabal Gurung and Ralph Lauren during a Spring strategic planning session in order to designate looks, textiles and beauty schemes. (Note to designers: please invite me to the meeting if a session actually does take place!)  At any rate, Spring, just like any other season, did see some similarities across the runways. Here are some of my favorites are below!

Cutouts:
Keep them subtle and they'll take you far. If Lela is doing it, then all preppy Southern ladies should...and I imagine they (we) were the last holdouts against this trend.

3.1 Phillip Lim/ Lela Rose/ Alexander Wang

Statement Coats:
After a long winter of bulky layers and heavy coats, if you still have to don outerwear in the spring, then it needs to be special. Leave it to the standouts of 2015 to make you wish for the slightest nip in the air come April.

J.Crew/ Suno/ Tory Burch

Yellow:
What can we say about yellow that everyone doesn't already know? It's bright, cheerful and youthful. Energize your closet should you feel worn out next spring.

Nanette Lepore/ Diane von Furstenberg/ Veronica Beard

Minimalism:
Keep it clean and you'll always be in style.

Rag & Bone/ Jason Wu/ The Row

Did you notice any interesting trends on the Spring fashion runways? Of course, there were many more but these were some if the most interesting and applicable to real life in my humble opinion. Will you try to work any into your wardrobe? I hope to make one of those statement coats mine...maybe it will be a cool spring in the south!

Fashion Week in February

When New York hosts Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February, you never know just what the weather will do. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow last weekend and predicted six more weeks of winter. Then Mother Nature bombarded the U.S. with an insane winter blast reaching from Minnesota to New York. All a fashion girl can do is break out the (faux) fur, strap up her boots and get ready to stomp it out in the snow!

Top Right Image via Tumblr/ J.Crew Silk Top/ Alice + Olivia Faux Fur Vest (on sale!)/ Bottom Right Image via SalonThesis/ Tory Burch Bootie/ Club Monaco Moto Pants/ Rachel Zoe Coat (comes with detachable faux fur collar AND on sale!)

With all this crazy cold weather, keep in mind that this time of year is an excellent time to stock up on coats, vests and even boots for next winter. If your (un)lucky, you may even be able to wear some of your new duds in the next few weeks! Stay tuned for more Fashion Week highlights next week!

Fashion Week Round-Up

You may have noticed it's been a little quiet around Savoir-Flair. This silence was all in reverence to a captivating Fashion Week in New York. Live streams, Instagram feeds and famous designers' tweets kept me busy dashing around the 'net for the latest Spring '14 runways looks. All of that hard work and down time from the blog leads to one heck of a Fashion Week round-up today. Hint: It's gonna be a good year.

Metallics & Embellishments:
They're baaaaack. And in the best way possible. For the freshest feel, pair your precious metals with pale pastels. Bonus points for beading.

Tory Burch/Proenza Schouler/ Wes Gordon

Organic Patterns:
Gone are the days of tribal inspired prints. Welcome back, Mother Nature. Everything from marble to geodes to tree branches was represented in the new organic patterns.

Proenza Schouler/ Marissa Webb/ 3.1 Phillip Lim

Feeling Fresh:
These aren't basic pieces- their dressed up details make each piece special but you can certainly wear them everyday. They aren't everyday pieces though. Does that make sense? In other words, fresh...not boring.

Kate Spade/ Tory Burch/ J.Crew

Textures:
Along the lines of organic patterns, even Spring's textures have an organic appeal. Until now, textural differentiation came in the forms of leather, tweed, silk and suede. Now it's all about sweet hand embroidery, fringe and sheer insets.

Lela Rose/ 3.1 Phillip Lim/ 3.1 Phillip Lim

Sporty Menswear Inspired:
Whether it's an anorak, an oversized sweater or boyfriend shorts, women have it made in menswear for Spring. Keep in mind that we see menswear coming back year after year. If there's one trend to invest in, this one is it.

Rachel Zoe/ Rag & Bone/ Tory Burch

Of course, we must pay homage to some serious shoes...can't wait to get my hands on these!

Finally, if some starlet does not wear this Proenza Schouler look on a Red Carpet soon, my head will explode.

Fashion Week is well underway in NYC and it's time to examine Fall 2013. While I haven't had tons of time to review all my favorite designers, I did take a quick peek at a few last night. What can you expect for next fall- moody hues, dark romance and tons of texture. Fall 2013 is less about mixing pattern and more about mixing textures. Pair leather with cashmere, satin with tweed or suede with marabou. Anything goes as long as you stay in a neutral color palette or attack the look with a tone-on-tone approach.

As you can see from the images above, there's not a whole lot of color to be found. After the J.Crew presentation this morning, I expect that void to be filled. (Can't wait to watch it unfold over Instagram!)

Stay tuned for more images and commentary. It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Fashion Show Within the Fashion Show

Self Service UK

We all know that Fashion Week is all about parading the latest looks down the runway but distracting me from the catwalk coverage are all the lovely looks on the front rows, backstage and sidewalks!

Fashion Week seems to be the best time to flex your styling muscles. I've tried to take note of all the flawless looks as they've popped up over the last week. Whether in the venue or in the elements, these ladies have great style going on...
