Red Carpet Round Up: The 72nd Golden Globe Awards

When an awards show is named for a precious metal, why would we expect anything besides metallic gowns to rule the Red Carpet?? Metals certainly made their statement last night at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards but there wasn't one metallic shade in particular that we saw on repeat. Gunmetal, silver, champagne and even bronze stole the show. Hollywood's sirens looked gorgeous, as always, but I have to give my best dressed of the night to Julianne Moore in her ombre Givenchy. STUNNING! What a major movie star moment. Dakota Johnson came dangerously close to stealing Moore's look but her Chanel gown traded the feathered skirt for a center slit. Crisis averted.

My two favorite redheads served us some serious style. Props to Emma Stone for taking a risk by wearing an unexpected jumpsuit with beaded bodice by Lanvin. The giant bow gave the edgy look a playful nod. Jessica Chastain was simply sexy in her bronze Versace dress. I would almost dare to say her dress looks comfortable if it weren't for the knotted plunge.

Speaking of the plunge, Jennifer Lopez and Sienna Miller showed off some major décolletage- one more than another- in their opulent frocks. Zuhair Murad designed J. Lo's dress, which reminds me a teeny bit of one of her other famous Red Carpet looks, while Sienna looked perfectly fresh in Miu Miu.

Emily Blunt and Quvenzhane Wallis brought a bit of brightness and freshness to the Red Carpet. Blunt accessorized her Michael Kors gown with resort worthy turquoise jewelry while Wallis looked sweet and age appropriate in Armani. 

There were many other gorgeous looks last night but I left off most of the gowns that I felt like we had seen before. ***cough cough Kate Hudson*** 

But more than that, I must say that I appreciated the serious cultural and political undertones to the evening. I won't hop on my high horse here but I want to just say one thing:

Kindness matters and the world is watching. Each of us will be held accountable for the way we treat others in life.

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last night in good old Hollywood. For the fashion obsessed, awards season is like the Super Bowl of style. However, last night, there were a few too many fouls on the play. What's with all of the mock turtlenecks? (I made my dad throw his away about 10 years ago.) And just-outta-bed down 'dos? And every single woman displayed a smokey eye? Wow...groundbreaking. As I watched with one of my Wilmington gal pals, we decided that the matronly effects resulted from the "Downton Abbey" syndrome. It's 2013 people. We know there aren't many angels on the Red Carpet. So let's get real.

My top picks from last night's Red Carpet were the ladies who chose to razzle dazzle us with sparkle, shine or, at the very least, impeccable tailoring. Kerry Washington rocked my favorite look from head to toe, looking beyond in a beaded and blush toned Miu Miu dress with sheer overlay, Cleopatra-esque fringey hair and glowing skin. I love the risky length on her and, surprisingly, those full coverage pumps. On someone else, this look could have been a huge miss but on fashion-forward Kerry, it works!

Winner Anne Hathaway always brings it full force on the Red Carpet. This year, she looked amazing in a two-piece Chanel number. Thank you, Anne, for not letting us down!

Isla Fisher rocked the sheer cap sleeve and crystals on this Reem Acra gown. The nude color was ab fab on her and did anyone else notice her heavy brow? That's a beauty trend I noticed on several starlets last night. Paging Brooke Shields!

"The Sessions" nominee Helen Hunt looked so soft and feminine last night. Her all-out glamour was a huge surprise to me and I love her for it. Kudos to Dolce & Gabbana for creating such an amazing piece and props to Helen Hunt's stylist for adding the perfect hair, make-up and accessories.

Beyond the sparkle and on to the tailoring, "Game Change" winner Julianne Moore wore a Tom Ford stunner with Bulgari jewels, of course. Predictable? Sure. But it works for her and stood out from all of the pink and pouf that everyone else wore. Kate Hudson also wore a beautifully tailored black dress but her down 'do and flyaways kept me from adding her to this post. Sorry, girl.

Super secret hottie Amy Poehler was another pleasant surprise to me. She rocked the Red Carpet in a Stella McCartney tux (sans shirt!) and amazing Chopard necklace. She looked STUNNING. I would only say that the length of her pant made her look a little short to me. I think the hem should have been a teensy bit longer to elongate her frame. Otherwise, the hair, make-up, clothes and accessories were perfection!

Finally, for a dose of color, I loved Jennifer Garner in oxblood Vivenne Westwood. She looked soft and lovely with the perfect amount of jewels, tailoring, structure and make-up. Congrats to her hubby on winning Best Director for "Argo!"

I don't mean to leave all of the other dresses in colors off of this post but I just cannot promote busty crumb catchers and droopy chest draping. Sorry, ladies. You are gorgeous and talented and we just don't agree on your choices.

AH! So much to say about last night's Golden Globes Red Carpet. Where do I even begin?!

Did anyone else have a hard time falling asleep last night due to Anne Hathaway's return to all-out glam? Let's be honest, the girl made it WERK! She and stylist Rachel Zoe killed it with Hathaway's Armani Prive paillette gown...backless, no less. Simply stunning. Seventies glam is back with class- leave it to RZ!!

Speaking of Seventies glamour, Angelina Jolie also got the memo. She brought the element of surprise in an emerald green sequined Versace number. The Italian designers certainly churned out some of the hottest gowns of the season... molto bella!

Oscar de la Renta was also well represented by nominees Lea Michele and Piper Perabo. Michele tapped into her girlie side this year by sporting a pale pink number, giving her classic look a little age-appropriate twist.

Perabo appeared as a modern classic beauty in her black bow-topped gown plus red lips and sleek pony. I also loved her gorgeous studs in place of major chandelier earrings, keeping all of the attention on her flawless face.

Italian designe houses Prada and Emilio Pucci also presented some gorgeous numbers on Nicole Kidman and Kyra Sedgwick, respectively. I am LOVING this mango color on Sedgwick and can't wait to try it for spring.

Olivia Wilde sparkled in an ombre sequined Marchesa gown and added Christian Louboutin statement heels underneath the layers and layers of tulle. Gotta love a girl who still rocks a studded shoe despite the heavy embellishment!

In odes to the upcoming spring trends, Emma Stone and Claire Danes played up their minimalist Calvin Klein looks with maximum color. Stone chose a backless peach number that accentuated her amazingly toned figure while Globe winner Danes popped in a hot pink halter.

Romantic metallic looks by J. Mendel and Badgley Mischka also graced the frames of "Glee's" Dianna Agron and nominee Carrie Underwood. Metallics are always my black, so you know I loved seeing these strapless beauties!

Someone who received virtually no press but whom I thought looked amazing was another "Glee" gal, Amber Riley. She went the silver sequined route in this Oliver Tolentino gown. When I saw her come down the carpet for a split-second, I thought she looked fabulous. You go girl!!

And thank goodness we have January Jones to rely on as our fashion risk-taker. She donned Versace yet again and looked truly glam in red. I love a platinum blond in a tomato red and this daring number flattered her figure perfectly...fringe and all.

Jones said she saw the dress in a different color on the runway. She asked the designer to make it in red because she hadn't done red on the carpet before. We're so glad the fashion house acquiesced...the result is nothing short of amazing! Although, I'm not loving that clunky black shoe. A strappy or peep toe metallic could have served much better.

Jones's Versace is strikingly similar to another Versace look worn by Blake Lively a few weeks earlier. Not the strappy sandals in place of the heavy heel...

All in all, the Golden Globes' Red Carpet did not disappoint. I am beyond thrilled at Hathaway's look and cannot wait to try some of these peach and mango tones for spring myself. Lots of inspiration to draw from for the upcoming months...

But until the weather gets warmer, who's excited for The Grammys??
