Vermillion's Spring Fashion Show Line-Up

If you're the type to flirt with your fashion, then Spring is gonna be your fling-iest season evaaahhhh! Say hello to cropped jackets, wide leg trousers, bright colors and peplums. (What? You didn't think Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton wouldn't start a trend now, did you?)

I gathered this information from the Vermillion Spring Fashion Show yesterday in Raleigh. The show proved to be yet another sartorial delight, which Vermillion customers have certainly come to expect in a place where 10 Crosby mingles with Balenciaga and Anya Hindmarch rubs the elbows of sporting Lela Rose.

I could go on and on trying to describe the eye candy but a picture is worth a thousand...er, vermillion...words...

These Instagram and iPhone pics are just a few give you a glimpse of the goods. Overall, an overwhelming sense of optimism is present now more than we've seen in the past four years. The world- or at least the crowd at Vermillion yesterday- is excited to get dressed again and the stock at Vermillion doesn't disappoint.

Some of these pieces could be tricky, but don't feel overwhelmed. Just keep in mind that proportion is always key:

Wide leg trousers with slim fitting (possibly tucked) in shirts and a substantial heel (chunky wedges if you're short; a supportive flat if you don't need height)

Cropped jackets with hip length or longer tops

Longer peplums conceal wider hips...shorter peplums create the illusion of curves- either way, a skinny waist the peplum will carve

Red Carpet Round-Up: The 84th Annual Academy Awards

Award season ended with a bang last night at the 84th Annual Academy Awards. I'm happy to report that this year's Red Carpet did not disappoint! In fact, it got the VAMP of approval- "Vamp" because nearly every starlet added some sort of dramatic accent, whether it was a red lip, gigantic bow, A CAPE or dark nail polish.

My top three best dressed A-listers run the style gamut: Gwyneth Paltrow in white, caped minimalism care of Tom Ford, Jessica Chastain in dark and romantic Alexander McQueen and a glowing and feminine Octavia Spencer in her favorite designer, Tadashi Shoji. Gwyneth's cape came off for her onstage presentation, revealing fab, padded capped sleeves. Her glitzy cuff added Wonder Woman power to her superhero look. McQueen of the Red Carpet, Jessica Chastain, looked gorgeous with gold eye make-up and romantic Raphaelite hair. Octavia Spencer's figure looked smokin' hot in her winner-worthy silver sequins...

Jewel tones also reigned supreme with Leslie Mann in sapphire Roberto Cavalli, Glenn Close in emerald Zac Posen and Emma Stone in fuschia Giambattista Valli. Derek Blasberg of Harpers Bazaar excitedly tweeted that Leslie Mann was the first starlet to wear Cavalli and not look like an Italian hussy. Ha! I couldn't agree more! She appeared effortless and chic yet remained festive and sparkly. I also loved Glenn's man-repelling tux jacket worn over her ball gown. And while Emma's frock was not my favorite, the color was stunning on her.

I also appreciated Berenice Bejo's gorgeous mint Elie Saab gown, despite its busy bead pattern. The pastel hue looked fresh and made me yearn for spring. We also saw a lavender pastel on Penelope Cruz in her nod to Grace Kelly.

Of course, our Red Carpet risk-takers must be recognized. Rooney Mara stunned in a lacy Givenchy number. I loved the contrast of her dark, blunt cut bangs against her soft, ethereal gown. Shailene Woodley also took a big risk in her white, long-sleeved Valentino Couture. Her look certainly was not one of my favorites but I appreciate her attempt to bring something different to the Red Carpet. And, finally, a sentence I never thought I'd write- Tina Fey made a fashion forward move that majorly paid off in her black Carolina Herrera avec peplum. Her figure looked phenomenal and I highly recommend she rock a structured gown more often! We also saw Michelle Williams in a Louis Vuitton peplum but I happened to like Tina's look much better.

We can't conclude this post without a nod to Emma Stone's fabulous Louis Vuitton accessories. I stared at her clutch and chain link bracelet every time I could see them, despite that gigantic bow eating her face. (Sorry, I can't help it.)

And, finally, one last piece of glitz before we go. Milla Jovovich was the one of the first glamazons to arrive but certainly made a lasting impression. Her silver beaded Elie Saab gown fit her perfectly and added every bit of drama the Oscars deserves.

If you haven't been completely inundated by high-low designer collaborations by now, then here's another one to excite you. Marni for H&M makes its debut on March 8 and, for the first time in a long time, I'm pumped about a high-low collection! (Sorry Target.)

Marni clothing has never been a brand to offer much sex appeal. Bookish, artsy girls (think Sofia Coppola and Rashida Jones) are usually drawn to Marni for its daywear. The Marni appeal tends to revolve around geometric patterns, interesting fabric choices and wearability.

However, when it comes to accessories, Marni has easily outdone every other designer by combining blocky organic materials with crafty synthetics. For that reason, I'm particularly interested in getting my hands on several Marni X H&M necklaces, bags and bangles...and maybe a sequined collar. With the entire collection's price point below $120, Marni necklaces finally won't break the bank.

Hello lovely readers! I apologize to you for the time lapse since my last post. New York Fashion Week was in full swing and I found myself hypnotized by live stream fashion shows and photo recaps. Of course, I thought of you the entire time and have composed a little Fall 2012 trend report that I hope you will enjoy!

First fall observation: Burgundy is the new black. Your LBD now stands for little burgundy dress. The soft, autumnal shade rifts on last fall's merlot tones but paraded out in more sophisticated cuts this year.

Along those sophisticated lines, spring's ladylike trend totally translates to fall and winter. Don a peplum or a floral print but whatever you do, be sure your hem line hits at the knee and no shorter.

If your look requires a little more edge and you got on board with mixing prints, Fall 2012 is all about mixing textures. Wear fur with tweed and silk. Put on python with a knit and something sheer. The texture of the material is pattern enough to mix it up this fall.

Finally, metallics are back with a vengeance but this time keep your sheen a warm hue. Copper, brass, gold and bronze blend well with burgundy and push its silver sisters to the back of the closet.

The basis of this spring style: fit and flare dresses in candy colors or soft prints. Pairing them with classics- pointy heels or flats, vintage inspired jewelry, natural make-up and polished coifs- drives the look home. Of course, I'd never be opposed to seeing a little black leather jacket and smokey eye with a damsel-ish dress but that's just me.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" premieres nationwide today! I worked on this film last year and we built some INCREDIBLE sets. I am so looking forward to seeing how they turned out!

Some of the scenes were filmed in Hawaii and some in North Carolina. Sadly, I did not get to work in Hawaii but I'll offer an "aloha" to The Rock anyway...

In my daydreams, we have a film premiere tonight with a Red Carpet and crew celebration. IF that was what I was doing tonight, this glitzy look would be my go-to.

If I just so happened to have my dream job as a fashion editor (and my dream bank account), I'd definitely take a style cue from my favorite New Yorker, Shala Monroque, when attending Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. (Sorry, Carrie Bradshaw.) This Nanette Lepore get-up ushers in the neon trend in a sophisticated way while the contrasting python skirt offers a nod to the colorblocking trend. Taking a cue from Ms. Monroque, I'd add a pair of statement shoes and a big old necklace. Don't forget the jacket- it's winter up North, after all!

Whether you're a fan of Madonna or not, you couldn't help but be somewhat mesmerized by her high fashion get-ups during the halftime show. I wouldn't say that I'm a major Madonna fan- and I wasn't exactly thrilled about her OTK boots- but I was absolutely drooling over her Egyptian entry and gilded headdress. Vogue, indeed!

To the fashion world's delight, we learned that Madonna wore Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. The aforementioned head piece was designed by none other than British power milliner Philip Treacy. Reportedly, Madonna wore the Cleopatra-inspired costumes below as a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor.

Reportedly, Jason Wu's collection for Target was inspired by French New Wave films and 1960s American actress Jean Seberg. Upon first online glance, I felt only a moderate amount of desire for these pieces. Yet, being a self-confessed Francophile and remembering one beautifully tailored Wu Resort piece I tried on months ago, I found myself in Target this afternoon and, ultimately, the proud new owner of the top above.

We're all well aware by now that pastels are a huge look for spring. Blush will be beautiful with ivory, white and khaki for a classic warm-weather look. If you're feeling extra bold this summer, a gorgeous mint or orange short or skirt creates a serious color block moment. But blush tones feel invigorating and unexpected now with bordeaux, gray, black and denim.

My beau and I have an oyster roast this weekend for a dear friend's engagement party. Sometimes these types of parties can be tricky when it comes to the old wardrobe- they take place at night yet they're casual events. You want to wear your favorite gear but you'll be handling slippery seafood, red cocktail sauce and greasy melted butter.

What's a girl to do? I say break out those duck boots and work from the bottom up!

If you've read my blog in the past, you may have seen my post about a dining room re-do. I can report that nothing has happened, so far, except a bunch of brainstorming. Sigh...isn't that how all creative genius begins? Yes? Maybe?

In these brainstorms, sometimes, I think a semi-gloss navy wall paired these fine friends would do the trick:

How can you go wrong with a Scalamandre, Schumacher, Ben Moore equation? True, the old bank account would get hurt but the result is pure perfection.

Other times, I think a Greek key partially wallpapered wall would be subtly stylish- just applied from the chair rail to the ceiling. This pattern can be subtle in taupe and grey or bold in black or any of the 30 Ben Moore color wheel options they match. How fun is that idea?

Red Carpet Round-Up: SAG Awards

On behalf of my sartorial sisters, I'd like to thank the members of the Screen Actors Guild. We asked for more drama on the red carpet and you brought it. Full party skirts? Check! Sequins? You betcha. Color??? HALLELUJAH. Even though there was a bit of a white out on the red carpet, those who did wear a color rocked it...for the most part.

Now for my Red Carpet awards. The clear winner, at least in my eyes, was Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen. Not only was her dress flirty and fun but Emma also sashayed down the press line like a girl going to her first prom. She appeared fun, effortless and classy all at once. Well done, my fellow strawberry blonde. (Nevermind if hers might be from a bottle.)

Major kudos to Rose Byrne for her "Scarface" reincarnation. She rocked this sequined jumpsuit like it was 1971. Though I obviously did not see her in person, this photo doesn't do her justice. The hair, make-up and fit of this get-up were perfection.

And I was delighted to see a colorful Oscar de la Renta frock on Emily Blunt. Where is all the ODLR this year?? Her sequined clutch was perfection against that apple green.

I don't usually adore the looks of the E! hosts but I have to give it to Giuliana for wearing not only a colorful, interesting geometric pattern but also a serious metal statement necklace. Maybe she could have pulled her hair back, no?

The best looking couple hands down goes to Armie Hammer and his gorgeous wife Elizabeth Chambers, both in Gucci. Holy hotness! His tux was actually a really beautiful midnight blue. Usually I wouldn't go for it but Armie's approachability and modestly made the black alternative approvable. Elizabeth looked flawless and she ushered in the white out on the Red Carpet...

The white out continued with Viola Davis in an ethereal Marchesa stunner.

White gradually faded to gray with Tilda Swinton in Lanvin, another 70s style ode...

Precious Ariel Winter ushered in the gray with another surprisingly stylish frock, this time by Collette Dinnigan and shoe by Miu Miu. Two awards shows in a row this girl has appeared fresh and age appropriate. Calling Lea Michele! (Sorry, girl and Gleeks.)

Finally, we must pay homage to Glen Close and her Zac Posen gown. How fab does she look?? Ladies who are concerned about body issues, this is the dress to wear. That corseting! That fishtail skirt! Those chiffon sleeves!! It's proof that you can WERK no matter your age...

Last night's Red Carpet was way more fun to watch than the Golden Globes. Of course, it wasn't all fab and there were some styles that I really wanted to like but just couldn't bite on- Michelle Williams in Versace, Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Couture and Sofia Vergara in Marchesa.

There were so many obvious trends on the carpet as well- the white/grey/beige thing is still happening and lace topped just about everything. Later this week, we'll talk trends and find some Red Carpet to real life style.

Thank GAWD it's Friday! It's a dreary, rainy day here and all I want to do is climb back in bed for a long winter's nap.

In keeping with the spring fashion daydream, one of the more surprising styles we've seen popularized by multiple designers is the resurgence of 1940s-inspired dressing. When I think of the 40s fashion, women drawing lines up their leg to give the appearance of nylons pops into my brain.

Luckily at the present time, we're not in such dire straits. Forties fashion comes by way of a gentle, feminine silhouette cut from vibrant patterns and colors. Highlighting the waist and wrists while emphasizing the bust and a strong shoulder added key figure flattery to the dresses of that decade and today. Way back when, this cut resulted from the lack of materials. Today, it's just plain cute!

Tonight the world will experience a New Moon, the first of the year. And with this New Moon comes an new energy surge. Personally, I have been STRUGGLING since the holidays ended- tired and wiped out from too much work and play. Starting tomorrow, let's hope we'll all get a little more energized, starting with our wardrobes...of course!

How about riffing off a bright and peppy spring trend, the good old floral pattern. Usually, I'm not one for a frou frou style but the florals of 2012 have attitude. Mix them in with stripes, wear a leopard heel, don a bright statement necklace or go Carrie Bradshaw and strap into a dominatrix heel.

However you wear them, wear them with confidence- don't be a shrinking violet.

It seems like every winter, I hit a wall with my black clothes- a big, fat, dark brick WALL. Do you do the same? This impact causes an equally strong desire to find all things colorful and make them WERK with the winter wardrobe, which is why the day glo rage might just be my saving grace!

I refuse to use the word NEON as it invokes 1980s puff paint shirts and the smell of old Jellys. Bleck! But day glo sounds lovely and bright and SOPHISTICATED. Red Carpet Round-Up: Golden Globes

We sat. We watched. We critiqued.

During last night's Golden Globe Awards, we witnessed everything from let-downs to snooze-fests (what's with all the nude, beige, blush, greige, blah!) to some major WOW moments, though not nearly as many as I would have liked.

My two top picks for best dressed have to be Claire Danes in J. Mendel and Emma Stone in Lanvin. These ladies really can do no wrong in my eyes but they also brought the most FASHION to the awards show.

Claire's laser cut black and white column gown looked so interesting and chic. Overall the front of the dress was very understated but those gorgeous cutouts along the shoulder and back knocked her look out of the park. Add red lips and a sophisticated 'do and we're into major hottie territory. Jordan Catalano is drooling right now. That is a look to win in, my friends!

Emma Stone gets mad props for wearing COLOR. Thank you, Miss Emma, for bringing some drama, including those jewel embellished cap sleeves. Gorgeous!

Rooney Mara did not disappoint in her signature black. Ladies, this is black done RIGHT- flowing yet fitted in all the right places, sexy cut outs fastened with demure bows. Her sleek pony and perfectly lined eyes kept her looking youthful and fresh. Love!

"Modern Family's" Ariel Winter arrived in a gorgeous amethyst Dolce & Gabbana frock. Her precious ensemble was age appropriate and fun. Moments like these should occur more frequently on the Red Carpet!

And though I was bored with all of the lack of color, Shailene Woodley from "The Descendants" did sparkle in Marchesa. Many of us had a "who's that girl" moment. I'm looking forward to seeing her style choices at future events.

Of course, we can't post on the Globes without at least mentioning Charlize Theron's 1920s princess moment in Dior, Tilda Swinton's powder blue Haider Ackermann, Michelle Williams sweet Jason Wu and Jessica Chastain's beaded Givenchy. I didn't love them and I didn't hate them. But I do appreciate their choices and fashion sense.

Most of the men last night also looked very dapper. A classic black tux ALWAYS works. Thank you, Colin Firth and George Clooney.

To start the new year off on the right foot, I cleaned out and organized all of the neglected drawers and cabinets in my home but quickly realize my jewels are a probling. (Get it? Problem + Bling = Probling) Cuffs and bangles scatter about my chest of drawers...A few pieces beg to be organized in a small jewelry box nearby and my everyday items sit on my dresser in monogrammed lucite. Oh, don't forget the necklaces hanging on my closet door.

Now that the holidays are over and the cold weather has set in, how do you keep from entering the winter doldrums? It can be tough when Spring seems so far away, morning runs require gloves and scarves and there are no three-day weekends in sight.

It's about this time of year that I turn to an easy morning routine that keeps my spirits up and my cheeks appropriately rosy. A few new make-up purchases make winter skin luminous again and give us a little something to look forward too...besides that steaming cup of tea.

Before my stint as a bridesmaid at the NYE nuptials, I hit up the Bobbi Brown counter for a few fun pick-me-ups. Since winter weather and indoor heat tends to try out my skin, I opted for the cream blush cheek tint in Sheer Lilac. It's gives my skin a little more of a natural glow than powder blush and to up that glow's ante, I layered the shimmer brick in Rose. The shimmer brick can be used all over, including eyes and decollete during the evening. And to give it that final pop, a swipe of high shimmer lip gloss in Pink Tulle does just the trick.

Packin It Up: New Year's Eve Nuptials

While New Year's Eve is usually considered the most overrated holiday, this year actually has something fun in store around here. My best pal from growing up gets married this weekend and I can't think of a better way to end one year and start a new one than with old friends and my family. Of course, special attention must be paid to the outfit choices, it being a holiday and my bff's wedding. My spray tan currently prevents me from actually trying these clothes on before packing so I leave it up to you to determine if I'm in good sartorial shape or not! My goal is to not over pack, for once, but have everything I truly need. Therefore, I'm going to try to swing this weekend with one handbag and two pairs of heels...we'll see if this plan succeeds or not.

Soooo...how do you feel about a dark but glossy navy wall? To me, it sort of feels like the sassy younger sister of light blue. The pale blues of the world are safe, smart and always welcoming but the glossy navies are the equivalent of the friend who has traveled the world, dating rich men and coming home with unbelievable stories and souvenirs. In other words, something about a dark navy feels glamorous and a bit unexpected but without taking a dive way off the deep end.

After mulling over my current dining room situation, I've decided that a little glamorous risk might be just what my house needs. Currently, it's the safest color possible, a sandy beige. My PLAN, though it may go unexecuted, is to paint below the chair role molding white so that a good half of the room contrasts with the darker hue. Adding the glossy finish will help keep the already small-ish room from caving in on itself by reflecting light. Plus, another shine never hurt...unless it's my forehead doing the shining.

Now that my living room is (mostly) complete, it's time to update the dining room! I'm not quite sure how to tackle it since a large arch adjoins the dining room to the den. I don't want the rooms to look completely identical but I do think the dining room should somehow be a glamorous extension of the living room.

Ladies, we need to talk about shoes and I'm not sure how you're going to react to my proposal. I'm writing to you today in hopes that you won't immediately scoff and close out this page, completely disregarding my opinion forever.

But lucite shoes are back and they are big time. Many of us, especially nice Southern gals, have relegated the lucite heel to "working girls" whose places of employment include Thee Doll House and Crazy Horse. You know what I'm talking about- the kind of working girls where the shoes' heel height must be six inches or higher or else you ain't performin' tonight. But I hold a certain affection for the lucite heel. My momma had a pair of what I always called "acrylic" heels in the '80s. They were fab slingbacks with a lucite heel, clear plastic toe strap and '80s fab silver rhinestone with copper adornment. They were her big night out shoes when dad donned a tux and she was in sequins. In college, I made those puppies mine and wore them proudly around Chapel Hill, receiving tons of compliments (oddly enough).

Maybe for sentimental reasons or maybe because I can't refuse a good deal, I recently purchased this $298 pair of Stuart Weitzman wedges for $20 at our Junior League's Bargain Sale. Logically, they were my size, they were comfortable, they were a STEAL and I could wear them in my friend's NYE wedding under a long sapphire blue dress. Ironically, lucite heels paraded down fall runways and made cameos in resort collections from Fendi to Dries Van Noten. It seems I've just made the ultimate good call!

Dries Van Noten made lucite eclectic and slightly bohemian on their runway while Chanel takes a conservative classic spectator pump and adds a little sass. - For the younger set, don't be afraid to mix your prints. Just keep in mind balancing the scale and trying to find a common color like the Richard Chai look above.

- If your lower half is not your favorite part, opt for a relaxed fit- a wide leg or bell trouser (a la Look 1 or 4) will flatter hips and thighs better than a tapered cut.

- A cropped pair can be cute on petites, especially with a pointy toe heel or flat (Look 2 and 3). Bonus points for a nude hue. Don't think you can get away with a boxy sandal though. You'll fall shorter than you really are.

Living Room Before & After

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had wonderful weekends. I FINALLY wanted to show you what I've been working on every weekend since Thanksgiving...my living room!

Aside from the hallway at my house, I never repainted a single room. The paint colors were nice and neutral and I just sort of settled for them. The sandy beige of my living room looked nice enough during the day but at night, it had a horrendous puke-y green undertone that drove me bonkers.

Aside from despising the nocturnal paint color, I also have never bought a new piece of furniture for this house. Everything I own came to me secondhand, whether it was a hand-me-down from family, a purchase from one of Wilmington's wonderful consignment stores or a steal from one of my show's set dec sales. I made do and lived like this for three years...

The living room was fine the way it was. I tried to liven it up with glossy black paint, Trina Turk pillows, a cowhide rug and black and white photography. But the couch- THE COUCH! It drove me insane.

Then one day, I found this sparkling Lexington gem at Custom Home Furniture...literally, it sparkles.

And so the games began...after coddling "Santa" and putting in a few $$ of my own, the couch became mine and the living room became a new space...

After MANY paint colors tests and lots of compromise, I finally painted the room Ben Moore's Ocean Air. What a breath of fresh air it has been! Do I think the room is perfect? No. The blue chair could stand to be recovered or replaced entirely and I need end tables to flank my sofa and sit next to the coral (ahem...orange) chair. But that stresses me out much less than a big ticket purchase.

The dogs still enjoy the furniture as well- what can I say, I like cuddling with them- but we cover the upholstery with a king sized comforter to keep dirt, drool and dander far away from the gorgeous tweed and brass nailheads.

So what do you think of this make-over? I refrain from showing you the dining room right now as it stands in a state of transition. But it's amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do...hmmmm...

I think I do this every year around this time. A firm desire for leopard accessories comes over me. I hunt for my favorites, settle on the top picks and then talk myself right out of purchasing. Anyone else have this problem? Last year, my beau's niece got a pair of fabulous Kate Spade leopard print flats. Last week, I saw them at the Kate Spade outlet and had to make them mine. Problem: only one size left and it wasn't anywhere near mine.

I, for one, happen to love all of the in between seasons. The less trendy but equally stylish items from Resort, Holiday and Pre-Fall have become some of my favorite pieces in my own wardrobe. Who What Wear "Girls Night Out" Chapter from What to Wear, Where

Any time I have a big occasion where sartorial attention must be paid, I do a little consulting with my two favorite authors- Hilary Kerr and Katherine Power. Today I head down South to celebrate one of my oldest and dearest friend's last days as a single woman. Her NYE nuptials only weeks away, it is our duty as her bff's to give her the most fun and unexpected weekend before she becomes a missus. And we must look our most festive while doing so!

For the car ride down with two of my besties, I'll be cozy and comfy in boyfriend jeans and pullover knit. Uggs- yes, I'm still wearing them- will keep my tootsies warm and pampered. Tonight will supposedly be a low-key evening, but I brought the black silk pants as a way to ditch the denim come nightfall. However, should tonight turn into a big night out, alternative tops are packed...Kerr and Power suggest that an evening out with the girls call for risk taking and staying away from anything too corporate. Should we venture out, the black silk pants will be swapped for black skinny jeans, spiky stilettos and a leather jacket.

Tomorrow, I'm guessing we'll be doing a good bit of lounging with maybe a few runs out to the outlets. For that, I've packed my cozy cords, a thin long-sleeve tee and a soft cardi.

Saturday night, we'll be riding a party bus ALL over town! There will be eating, toasting, roasting, dancing and laughing...and lots of it! For the multitude of places we'll pop in and out of, I nabbed a metallic cropped jacket, a silky white tank and waxed black jeans to look like leather.

By Sunday, it will be hard to put on anything more than pajamas. However, I'll manage to swap my Lululemon pants for these James Jeans plus a crisp button down and long cardigan.

And, of course, we can't forget to give a nod to the bags! Rebecca Minkoff's blue shoulder bag and Lauren Merkin's silver clutch will hold all of my essentials for day and night.

Hopefully, the girls of Who What Wear approve of these style selections. At any rate, these few details are the most I plan to divulge about this big weekend. What happens on the bachelorette weekend stays...no one remembers anyway!

Cook-In

I don't fancy myself a great chef. My preferred diet consists of mainly cheese and bread with a little lettuce thrown in and topped off with ice cream. No cooking required. However, apparently our bodies need fruits, vegetables and proteins so I try to sneak those in where I can. In an effort to break up the monotony of mine and my beau's past few dinners (pasta, pizza, frozen lasagna, Thanksgiving leftovers, pasta, pizza), I staged a no holds barred indoor cook-out...from hereon known as the winter cook-in.

Of course, there were potatoes- helloooo starch- but I snuck in the asparagus for its promise to de-bloat and to add a little green. I roasted the potatoes for 30 minutes at 415 degrees and then added the asparagus to cook them and the potatoes for 10 more minutes.

While they were cooking, black-eyed peas and kidney beans simmered on the stovetop. Once they had softened, I mashed them up and mixed them in with grated carrots and bread crumbs. The mash can be easily rounded into bean patties, which I then cooked in oil on the stove. Three to four minutes on each side does the trick. (There must be a healthier option but this is a COOK-IN for goodness sake!)

And would you believe me if I told you that I made barbecue sauce from scratch? It's actually really easy. Real chefs probably already knew that. But it is taaaaasty on those burgers!

Voila! The finished product! It's a good little meal to remind of summer's sunshine and warmth.

Of course, no cook-in would be complete without dessert. Double fudge brownies offer deliciousness. I could tell you I made those from scratch too but I'd be lying...

Obviously, you can funk up these pieces with a leopard print heel or day glo clutch, but I think keeping the entire look classic and playing up your hair and make-up sounds much more fun. You could always go for a classic red lip a la Leelee (top) but lately the gunmetal grays have really been making their way onto runways and red carpets.

Lately, I have really had a craving for subtle, sophisticated style. I'm feeling sort of done right now with all of the busy patterns and trying-to-hard clashing colors. You must be wondering if I fell and bumped my noggin over the holiday as I am the QUEEN of way-too-many-colors-at-once, but I seem to have finally joined with the rest of the mature, stylish world when I realized solids and neutrals just have this classic staying power that looks chic no matter one's age, the season or even the year.

The South African swimmer turned Monaco maven has caught my eye- and others' as well, as she's seen above seated with Anna Wintour at Paris Fashion Week- with her sartorial selections. Whether sexy chic in Armani or properly tailored in Akris, Her Serene Highness always looks not only appropriate and polished but also chic and glamorous.

It's so hard to believe that Thanksgiving is ONE WEEK away! While I don't eat turkey, I do love some to eat some mashed potatoes and decorate a Thanksgiving tables cape.

This year, I'm particularly fond of Serena & Lily's new table linens. Traditional? No. Gorgeous? Yes. Plus, and don't hate me for saying this, I truly despise anything too literal or theme-y at the holidays. Sorry, not a Scrooge, just like to keep my options open!

Back to the decor- this year, I've decided to go with a turquoise and gold theme- turquoise in honor of my coastal dwellings (and in the top five of favorite colors) and gold in honor of the special holiday. The Marabella napkins, tablecloths and placemats all have either gilded edging or color blocking that make this casual cotton linen set a bit more glamorous and unique.

We know they are cuffs. And this fall, I'm daydreaming of collars and cuffs in all of their sleek metallic splendor.

Chokers invoke that "My So Called Life" grunge style from the early '90s. No, I'm not going there (again). This time COLLARS are sleek and minimalist...futuristic if you will. Designers from Louis Vuitton to Michael Kors paraded them down their fall runways paired with everything from suits to furs.

The key to rocking the collar is keeping the remainder of your look classic with clean lines and solid colors. For your everyday life, wear them with a modal long-sleeved T by Alexander Wang top or, for nighttime, spiff up a neutral toned dress with a shiny silver piece like Margherita Missoni. Either way, you'll look au current and decidedly dangereuse.

As for the cuffs, the new way to rock them is in pairs. Clap them to the outside of your long-sleeved blouses and make sure you have one on each wrist a la Brooke Shields in the look below. Asymmetry just isn't what drives this trend home.

My favorite piece also happens to be the most dramatic but still minimalist accessory I've found so far. This Anndra Neen choker looks elegant with a black tux jacket or edgy with a burgundy tee. But if the whole collar thing feels a little too intense, tone it down with a tubed necklace as seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim and below.

Part of me really digs this Alexander Wang pair and thinks they would look chic and laidback with a white tee shirt and black oxfords by day. But another part of me is terrified of the idea. Sparkle on my bum? I hope the fanny fairy plans on paying me a firming session visit!

With holidays right around the corner, it's no surprise that sequined tops and dresses are reappearing on red carpets and in magazine spreads. But sequins that usually shimmer by day are now glowing by night? Now there's a surprise!

Halston's glow-in-the-dark party dress will be available to the masses within days. I can't deny that the silhouette is quite lovely but a chartreuse glow when the lights go down?? Can you handle that?

The price tag might reach close to $4,000 but, if money were no issue, I'm still not sure I would buy a glow in the dark dress. Most of us would prefer that fab silver Alexander Wang clutch pictured above, I think. I'll take 10 of those please.

But if you are sassy enough and have a social life that warrants such attire, you go on with yo' bad self! After all, Halston reached iconic status for a reason.

Ever since the Haute Indoor Couture and Life of Style blogs featured antelope print rugs, I have been obsessed with these little beauties. Growing up in a house full of duck decoys and mounted antlers (my poor mother) turned me into not only a vegetarian but also a lover of rustic decor.

Apparently, in the design world, these snazzy little rugs are old news, but to me, a fledgling decorator, these are a delightful new discovery.

Y'all, I've been slack. And I know it. I'm sorry about that.

You should know that I am diligently attempting to create a mind-blowing presentation about how to update a wardrobe for fall and would love for you to chime in. How do you make the transition? In the South, we've only recently begun to experience chillier temps. I started wearing more jackets and jeans but the flats are still in (on) tow.
